The advantages of UV-C light in sterilizing the air we breathe have been thoroughly documented over the last decade. The air in our homes is laden with bacteria, parasites, viruses, and other microbial contaminants. The UV-C segment of the electromagnetic spectrum quickly and effectively deactivates the RNA molecules in these microorganisms, leaving your air fresh and clean.
The challenge is that weaker UV-C lights often do not have enough time to fully irradiate the microbial parasites as the air flows through the system. This is partly because UV-C light degrades logarithmically rather than linearly. For instance, if you have 10 mw/cm2 of UV-C light at a distance of 1 foot from the light source, at 2 feet, the intensity isn't reduced to 5 mw/cm2 but likely to 1 or 2 mw/cm2. This rapid degradation means that harmful bacteria and viruses can evade the cleaning power of UV-C if they move quickly or are distant from the light source.
